Business and Biodiversity Handbook

In 1997, IUCN and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) published a path-breaking book: Business and Biodiversity - A Guide for the Private Sector. For the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development, IUCN and WBCSD joined forces with Earthwatch Institute (Europe) to develop a new Handbook for Corporate Action. The Handbook provides information on the business case for biodiversity, an overview of hot issues, and guidance on biodiversity management strategies.

We gratefully acknowledge financial support through the generosity of 3M; BP; CEMEX; UK Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA); DuPont; Novartis; Northumbrian Water; Ontario Power Generation; Pluspetrol Peru Corporation; Rio Tinto; RMC Group; Royal Dutch / Shell Group of Companies; Wildlife Conservation Research Unit (University of Oxford).

This companion volume to the Handbook provides the resources required to build corporate biodiversity capacity. It considers, in turn, the global biodiversity-related conventions, the world’s conservation union, and the major biodiversity-related business initiatives.

The Japanese translation was coordinated by Biodiversity Network Japan with the financial support of the Keidanren Nature Conservation Fund and the Japan Fund for Global Environment.

The Portuguese translation of the Handbook was coordinated by Conselho Empresarial Brasileiro para o Desenvolvimento Sustentável (CEBDS, a regional Business Council for Sustainable Development) with financial support from Banco do Nordeste.
